Today, people around the world use electronics products every day and will discard them in just a short period of time, that is because of the rapid changes in technology in the past years. With that, electronic gadgets are becoming obsolete and out-dated in a span of a year and that resulted in a fast-growing surplus of electronic waste around the globe. But gladly, a Scientist-turned-artist Amanda Preske is on a mission to bridge the gap between science and art while encouraging responsible recycling, she created ‘Circuit Breaker Labs‘ – A circuit board jewelry & accessories company.
Circuit Breaker Labs transforms electronics waste into a wearable art and gift products in her Washington, D.C. studio. Most electronic boards were being discarded right after they get broken and will end up into e-waste in garbage and landfills, but with Amanda’s expertise and critical eye, they become beautiful futuristic worlds captured under resin.
Amanda started Beadwork by Amanda at 14 and has been selling her handmade jewelry ever since. Her interest in using circuit boards as a creative medium started as a freshman in chemistry at RIT, where she found constant reminders of the problems caused by obsolete technology. She found that in their laboratory alone, they always had broken equipment and most of the time it will be piled up in the corner than being repaired. Because of her curiosity and the desire to make things, she disassembled the broken waste and developed a way to morph circuit boards into her polished aesthetic. Over a decade later, Amanda is still enthralled with the beauty in electronics and has turned everything from computers and cell phones to calculators and Arduinos into jewelry, accessories, gifts, and décor and she sources electronic waste from her friends, universities, and companies looking for alternative ways to handle e-waste.
